1946: Our Story Begins…
Our grandfather Milton began his career in the textile industry guided by a simple philosophy: provide nothing short of exceptional service, quality and value. With help from his brother Jack, Westchester Fabrics is founded in Mt. Vernon, NY. Word of their exceptional fabrics and customer service spreads quickly and the foundation for the future is laid.

1970-1980: Passing The Torch
More than 30 years pass. Westchester Fabrics solidifies its reputation as an industry leader, innovator and authority on window treatments. Cliff Gibbs, Milton’s son-in-law, joins the family business bringing with him ideas that are both inspirational and aspirational. Designs have never looked better and the business continues to grow.
1996: The Family Business
The landscape of the industry evolves and new opportunities arise. With the help of his dedicated sons Adam, Ian and Zach, Cliff Gibbs opens Home Works – a custom window treatment storefront in Westchester, NY. Milton’s values continue to serve as a compass for Cliff and his sons. A second store opens in Soho in 2000.
2005: Three Generations of Experience
The Shade Store is founded by Milton’s four grandsons – third generation fabric and window treatment experts Adam, Ian and Zach Gibbs, and Greg Spatz. Guided by the tried and true philosophy of their grandfather, they set out to provide beautiful, custom-made window treatments at affordable prices, while offering unrivaled expertise and customer service.
2006: A State-of-the-Art Facility
A state-of-the-art production facility is opened to ensure high-quality standards are consistently met. All products and manufacturing methods adhere to strict environmental standards. In addition to production, the facility is responsible for the research and development of low-impact materials, eco-friendly processes and green shipping methods.
2007-2009: Partnerships & Showrooms
With the successful launch of the website and a new catalog, The Shade Store opens showrooms in Soho, Midtown, Port Chester, NY and San Francisco, CA. Partnerships with top designers are formed including Chilewich, DwellStudio and Robert Allen. High-quality Shade Store products can be seen in Robert Allen showrooms nationwide.
