Decorating with Pink

The color pink has come a long way from nurseries and little girls’ rooms. While it certainly adds a feminine touch, pink can also help spaces feel light, airy, and elegant. Use it as the foundation of your color scheme or as a sparing accent color to bring instant sophistication to your space.

Pink as a Neutral

Pink, especially lighter shades, can act as a neutral base to set off architectural elements such as woodwork with natural, warm tones. Making It Lovely made over her front and back entries, stairs, and hallways for the Fall 2016 One Room Challenge and used pink paint, pink wallpaper, and pink Roman Shades. As you can see in the photo below, the abundance of pink provides a backdrop for the stunning wood stairs and trim in her 125 year old Victorian.

Similar to Making it Lovely’s design, this dining room by A Design Lifestyle includes pale pink features and a bold, blue rug. The Tailored Pleat Drapes in sheer pink draw the eye up to the high ceilings of this restored Edwardian home, while providing interest and texture far beyond what traditional white drapery could do. The drapes even pick up on the color of the lighting hardware and the tones in the chair upholstery, bringing the whole room together with a rich, cohesive design.

Pink as an Accent

For some smaller doses of pink, this color works beautifully as an accent, especially with strong graphic palettes like black and white. Julia Goodwin redesigned her master bedroom with lots of white, black hardware, and gray Tailored Pleat Drapes. The contrast of a colorful rug and coordinating throw and stools were the perfect place for some pops of pink, which keep the solid fabrics and straight lines in the room from looking too severe. The pink materials in the room help create an inviting oasis that still looks very much grown-up and refined.

Interior designer Amy Peltier also started with black and white inspiration for her home office and dining room featured on Apartment Therapy. In this small dual-purpose space, the furniture anchors the room with simple lines in black and white, while the artwork sets the mood for the other colors in the space. Rod Pocket Drapery in pink frames the corner window and softens the room, harmonizing with the art and peachy paint color.

When designing drapery for your space, drapery hardware is an important part of how the finished product looks and functions. You can choose striking curtain hardware that makes a statement on its own, or you can opt for a more subtle design that hides the hardware and emphasizes your drapery material. With 15 exclusive collections, you can achieve just about any look with designer drapery hardware from The Shade Store. Let’s discuss the three families of curtain rods and drapery hardware that we offer.

Steel Drapery Rods

Drapery Rods and Rings

Rods and rings are what most people think of when they think of drapery hardware. A curtain or drapery rod is mounted above your window, either on the ceiling or on the walls, and rings are used to attach the drapery panel to the rod. The rod and ring style of hardware provides you with the most visual customization options in terms of finishes and finials. Nine of our collections fit into this category, and work with: Tailored Pleat, Pinch Pleat, Inverted Pleat, Grommet, Goblet, and Rod Pocket Drapery.

In the case of Grommet Drapes, the rings are built into the drapery panels and reinforced with metal grommets, so the drapes slide directly onto the rod. Rod Pocket Drapes operate in a similar fashion, with a pocket sewn into the top of the panels which then slides over the rod.

When shopping for new drapery rods, there are several factors to consider. Each customized component plays an important role in the overall look and style of the rod, as well as the function.

Mount Type

The type of mount you choose will have a dramatic effect on the overall appearance of your drapery. A wall mount is ideal for windows and doors that are far apart from the ceiling, as it allows you easy control over opening and closing your drapes. With a ceiling mount, drapery hangs directly from the ceiling, offering a more dramatic, full-length look.

Finish

Each of our drapery hardware collections offers unique finishes to create a distinct look and style. There are more than 50 finishes to choose from, including stainless steel, satin brass, antique bronze, polished chrome, and rich woods.

Finials

While you may not be familiar with the term finial, you have definitely seen them before. Finials are the decorative elements on the ends of drapery rods. The style of finial that you choose can really elevate the look of the room, whether it be minimal, elaborate, modern, or classic.

Drapery Rings and Pins

One of the most popular way to hang drapery is by using rings, which slide over the rod. Depending on the style of drapery, pins may also be used. These small pins attach to the drapery on the back panel and hang onto the ring, creating a polished, streamlined look.

Drapery Track Systems

Our drapery hardware track systems provide a great deal of versatility for mounting and operation. Instead of rings, drapery panels attach to tracks with special clips that hang beneath the tracks. This design allows for a smooth glide when opening and closing, and therefore is excellent for treating large windows or patio doors and other spaces that require frequent use.

Drapery track systems can be mounted on the wall, window molding, or on the ceiling for added height, similar to our rods and rings. The Custom Track System, however, can also be inside mounted so it fits within a window or door frame.

Motorized Track Drapery Hardware

Motorization Made Simple™ is the newest addition to our drapery hardware family. Our system allows you to control your drapery with the touch of a button. Motorized drapery tracks can be installed as a ceiling mount or a wall mount. The powerful, quiet motor requires a plug, and you can choose to place it on the right or left side and select a custom cord length to ensure the motor reaches your desired outlet.

Drapery Ideas for Every Room in the Home

Drapery doesn’t have to signify old and stuffy. With new styles and a multitude of fabrics, it can be used in every room throughout the home, and fit in with any style. Whether you’d like to simply update the look of a room or if you have a specific need in mind (like light blockage), we’ll share our favorite drapery ideas for every room.

Bedroom Drapery

Sleep is important, and a darkened room can help you catch those 8 hours of shuteye a little easier. We recommend taking advantage of blackout linings in the bedroom, both for drapery and for any shades on your windows. Layering roman or roller shades with blackout-lined drapes will provide an ideal light blocking solution to keep your bedroom dark until you’re ready to wake up.

Drapes with a thicker fabric also look lovely layered over sheer drapes. The sheer layer lets light filter in during the day, while the outer layer of drapes can be pulled at night for privacy and a darker environment.

Bedroom drapery may be opened and closed multiple times per day, so it’s best to choose a style that can withstand a lot of action. Our Ripple Fold, Tailored Pleat, and Pinch Pleat draperies all offer high functionality, and maintain a neat appearance when drawn and pulled open.

Living Room Drapery

The living room is the perfect place to experiment with bolder window treatments. If you have solid colored furniture, try a print in complementary colors to add flair to the room.

In order to make windows look larger, hang your living room drapes higher and wider than the window frame. This also lets in more natural light when the curtains are open, making the room feel brighter.

Decorative styles like Grommet and Goblet drapery look stunning in bright colors and prints. If privacy is a concern, you can still use decorative drapes – add a roman shade or roller shade mounted underneath the drapery that can be closed when needed.

Kitchen Drapery

For a bright, cheerful kitchen, stick with sheers and light filtering fabrics that allow sunlight into the room. We recommend pairing your kitchen drapes with a roller shade or solar shade to block UV rays and also for easy cleaning – simply wipe down with a damp cloth when they get dirty.

The Shade Store 101: Insulated Curtains

Selecting a lining option is an important part of ordering custom drapes. Unlined drapes are made only of your fabric of choice, with no lining sewn to the back. This preserves the natural transparency of the material, and is perfect for sheer drapery. If you are looking for window treatments to decrease drafts or block sunlight, then lined or insulated curtains are the way to go.

Drapery linings provide a wide range of benefits for your home, including light blockage, privacy, and insulation. At The Shade Store, we offer three lining options: Privacy, Privacy + Interlining, and Blackout. Read on to learn more about these choices and their features.

Privacy Lining

The Privacy lining is the lightest of the three linings. It consists of a fabric panel stitched to the back of your drapes, which adds an increased level of privacy and light blocking. The extra layer protects the fabric from exposure to sunlight, preventing it from fading. It also adds body and fullness to the material.

Insulated Curtains

The following two linings are heavier than the Privacy option, and are excellent for insulation.

Privacy + Interlining

The Privacy + Interlining takes the standard Privacy fabric and adds another layer: a cotton flannel “interlining.” The flannel layer provides an even greater degree of privacy, and helps your curtains insulate drafty windows.

Blackout Lining

For the highest degree of light blockage, choose our Blackout lining. It blocks 99% of light, and the heavy material is very insulating. Blackout curtains are perfect for bedrooms, TV rooms, or anywhere else that you would like to block sunlight.

For complete room darkening, you may want to consider layered window treatments, such as a Blackout Roman Shade with Blackout Drapery and a Cornice or Valance.
