The Shade Store
The first introduction to Los Angeles-based Sarah Bocket’s hand-painted wooden goods immediately brought a smile. Why we love them: Simple. Custom. The pieces are timeless, and right in the same realm as our CUSTOM MADE SIMPLE® way of thinking at The Shade Store. Bocket’s process involves upcycling wooden objects (bowls, platters, dishes, etc.), fixing them up and painting the interior with a distinct palette of color, giving it a refreshed custom-crafted look. Her painting technique is tedious but simple. Using a tiny paintbrush, she paints each item with acrylic, covering them with multicolored dots.
“Everyone’s first impression when they find out that I really hand-paint every dot is a serious shock. Then they ask me if I’m crazy.”
On her site, she posted a great old-time-style video about the making of her handmade goods. It’s adorable, take a look.
As Summer begins to come to a close — yes yes, there’s still a few weeks left, I know — we thought we’d place all our product lines on sale 10% off through the end of August – a Midsummer Dream of sorts. We don’t do this very often, but with record-setting warm temperatures still lingering around the nation, we know that Fall is just around the corner. So you folks with the decorating bug in you will need to plan accordingly.
At The Shade Store, all of our window treatments have energy conserving benefits through many different insulating characteristics. And saving on energy in the long run also means saving money! Choosing the correct window treatments can help. Insulating your home from the heat and the cold with products that can instantly improve your home’s energy efficiency is a key factor in decorating. From insulating draperies to heat absorbing solar shades, select from our beautiful custom window treatments and choose the right product for your budget and style.
And in the meantime, just get back to enjoying the rest of the glory summer has to offer.

We decided to take a ride on the much-talked-about new East River Ferry into Williamsburg, Brooklyn this weekend. Such a fun and convenient commute from downtown Brooklyn. We had a great ride.
Scattering through the streets for some design inspiration, we hit up the usual Brooklyn Flea to browse hundreds of antiques and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry, art, and crafts by local artisans and designers. It’s always a fun couple of hours. Then we found some true interior design inspiration as we rounded the corner of N. 6th and Berry.
A&G Merch is a Brooklyn based home furnishings store in the heart of Williamsburg. It’s always worth a look to see what’s new and they usually have something that I *must* have. They are neighbors of the very popular Future Perfect home & design store, however A&G Merch is bit more affordable. They have a great selection of sofas and seating. The Cobble Hill Apartment Sofa below is my favorite.
And here are a few other items we nearly walked out with this weekend…
In the back of the store, they display a variety of window treatments from The Shade Store, too. So, you can even shop with us in person in Brooklyn. The store also has their own blog to keep us in the loop on special deals and news around the neighborhood. I’ll be checking back in there to see what’s new over these Summer months.
