1. Are these shades easy to operate?

Roman Shades in general are easy to operate and an Aventura Roman is no exception. Our standard control is easy to use and will allow you to operate your shades consistently and with little effort. Our continuous loop option is an excellent choice for larger shades.
Tip: Typically speaking we would say its worth considering a continuous loop if:
  • Shades are over 60"wide and/or 72" long
  • Shades will be in difficult to reach areas
  • Shades that will be opened and closed very frequently

2. Will these shades help insulate my windows?

Assuming you select a liner (blackout lining or Privacy + interlining are best) your shades will certainly provide and additional layer of insulation. For windows with significant draft, consider adding non-closing drapery or "side-panels" which will help keep cold air out.
Tip: Have drafty windows? Maximize your insulation by adding a pair of draperies (you can order them just as non-functioning side panels and save $) which will provide additional heat loss protection and look stylish while doing so.

3. Can this shade block out all the light?

The short answer is no, however, it can block most natural light from coming in. The level of light blockage and privacy you will get from an AVENTURA ROMAN SHADE is mostly the result of the material you select and the lining(s) you choose. Generally speaking, the heavier the material, the less light will come through. By adding a black out liner you will block the majority of light. Small pinholes of light may be visible where rings are hand-sewn to back of shade. If you are going to be mounting the shade within the window [inside mount] there will be a deduction we will take on the width to ensure that the shade function properly and this small "gap" will subsequently let some light in the sides. Selecting an outside mount will help alleviate some of the light seepage however then the shade will be projecting off the wall and there will still be some light still coming in.
Tip: The only way to get a true "cave effect" and block all of the light is to go "hotel-style" and treat your windows with blackout draperies that close and a cornice above [to prevent light seepage from the top].

4. Will my shades get messy when I use them?

AVENTURA ROMAN SHADES are amongst our most popular and are one of the neatest and easiest to maintain. Each shade feature 3/8" rod pockets with aluminum dowel inserts sewn to the front of shade approximately 6"-8" apart which help keep a more structured look. The lining you select - which will affect both the light that passes through the shade and the structure it has – also has an influence on appearance. The heavier linings [privacy + interlining and blackout lining] will certainly give a more tailored look and will typically make shades appear a bit “neater” than they would if unlined or privacy lined. Two of the other most tailored and “neat” roman shades styles are the FLAT and CASCADE. REMEMBER: Your shades will be made to the highest construction standards so treat them kindly and carefully [and ask any guests to do the same] and they will look great for years to come
Tip: remember certain materials are "neater" than others. For instance silk and linens always have some wrinkle to them. While these are some of our favorite materials if you are concerned you might consider a cotton, wool flannel or suede which typically wrinkle less.

5. The shades look great in your photos, will mine look like that?

There's no magic to the photos we show you, just some good taste, careful installation and some amazing interiors that we install them in. Your shades will be made by the exact same people, the exact same way. Lots of things will influence how things "look" in your space: size of shade, material / lining selected and of course the environment it is going in. All of our shades shown in photos have also been steamed.
Tip: If interested you can contact customer service for info about where you can buy an inexpensive hand help steamer ($25)

6. Why don't most other companies offer custom made Roman Shades?

The reason is simple: no one has the skill to make them properly. The few workrooms that perhaps can manufacture custom hand-made roman shades do so at a price point that is significantly higher than what we offer. Our staff of skilled craftsmen have been making these shades for some of the world's top interior designers for literally decades. The time and effort that goes into each shade is something that larger workrooms simply won't do. Simply put: nobody does it better.

7. I love the look of these shades but am concerned that even when open they will block much of my window. What can I do?

For starters we do offer a stacking chart that will give you a general idea of what the "stack" will be. [look under measure + install]. Remember these are just approximates and the exact measurement will vary depending on length and material/lining selected. You can view stacking chart at: http://www.theshadestore.com/item-files/page_27330_file.pdf After you have checked out the stack chart, if you are still concerned you should consider doing an outside mount and installing the shade high enough above the window so that when up the shade does not block the window.
Tip: Installing a Roman Shade above a window is a great trick that not only might help solve any concerns about blocking the window but is also a great way to give the illusion of a larger window and higher ceilings which can have a dramatic effect on the over all look.
